Mitchell was drafted 175th overall in 2009 by the Caps. He quickly rose the ranks of the Hershey Bears’ lineup, becoming an alternate captain in 2013 and soon transferring into the captain role in 2015. Right there is perfect evidence of the excellence and work ethic Mitchell has infused into Hershey’s culture. When announcing the contract, Vice President of the Bears Bryan Helmer proclaimed, “Mitchell is a great leader both on and off the ice, and plays a large role in the Hershey community. As we chase a 12th Calder Cup, we believe Garrett is the perfect person to lead our team and set a great example for younger players. He does all the little things right, and is a true professional.”
In the 2016-17 season, Mitchell played 71 games recording 10 goals and 10 assists.
