The roster additions continue to trickle in now that the summer is coming to a close, and hockey season will soon be upon us. The Phantoms announced on Friday that they have signed defensemen Zach Palmquist and Nick Luukko, as well as goaltender Branden Komm, for the 2018-19 season.
Zach Palmquist is a four-year AHL veteran who will leave the Iowa Wild to join the Phantoms. In his past four seasons with Iowa, Palmquist has racked up 69 points (12 goals, 57 assists), as well as 92 penalty minutes. He is coming off of a year where he produced career-high totals across the board in goals (6), assists (28), points (34), and PIMs (42). With his AHL career in its prime, Palmquist should add depth and stability to the Phantoms’ blue line in the fast-approaching season.
Nick Luukko also remains in the organization for another year, after spending a majority of last season with the Reading Royals. The 179th overall pick in the 2010 draft contributed five goals and 16 assists in Reading last season, which brings his career total in the ECHL up to 55 points (15 goals, 40 assists). The 26-year-old defenseman has only appeared in seven AHL games in his career, with the most recent contest coming last December in Lehigh Valley.
Branden Komm, a 27-year-old goaltender from Williamsville, NY, joins the Phantoms after his rights were acquired via a trade with the Manchester Monarchs last February. Last year was a whirlwind for Komm, as he played for four different ECHL teams, including the Idaho Steelheads, Quad City Mallards, Manchester Monarchs and Reading Royals. Between the four clubs, he played a total of 29 games, producing an overall record of 14-9-4-0, to go along with a 2.60 GAA and 0.917 save percentage.
The Lehigh Valley Phantoms will kick off their preseason schedule with an out-of-town matchup against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on September 27th at Mohegan Sun Arena. They return home for back-to-back preseason matchups with the Charlotte Checkers on September 28th and 29th at PPL Center.
The Lehigh Valley Phantoms begin their regular season on October 6th at PPL Center against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
