The season hasn’t exactly started the way that Spencer Carbery and the Bears would have liked, as the team has gone 3-6-0-1 in their first ten games. Although the team as a whole hasn’t been stacking the win column yet this season, one player is certainly making his mark both on the ice and on the score sheet. 24-year-old forward Liam O’Brien is already putting up points faster than any year prior. In just ten games with Hershey this season, O’Brien currently leads the team in both goals (6) and points (7). He also has goals in three of his last four games for the Bears.
The young forward is off to the best start of his career, and if he can keep this pace, he will far surpass his point totals from years past (16 points in 2015, 30 in 2016, and 26 in 2017). To put O’Brien’s hot start into perspective, last season he scored a career-high 17 goals, but goal number six didn’t come until the 20th game of the season. It has taken Liam just ten games to pot seven so far this year.
It’s not only his scoring touch that gets him attention in the league, but also his feisty style of gameplay. He has the innate ability to frustrate other teams, and the most recent scuffle of his career came just six seconds into the October 27th game against the interstate rival Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The puck barely had time to hit the ice before the gloves were off in a rousing bout between O’Brien and Garrett Wilson. A goal-scorer who can also hold his own in the physicality department is a hot commodity in the league, and Spencer Carbery will wisely be leaning on O’Brien to help build the team’s momentum as they look to trend upward in the standings as the season carries on.
In his 248 games in the AHL, O’Brien has accumulated 87 total points (44 goals, 43 assists).
